Cheer Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about MVAA Cheerleading?  Check out some of our FAQs and if you still have questions, email us.

My daughter has never cheered before, is that ok?Yes! We welcome new cheerleaders (with experience or none) to our program at any grade.
Does my daughter need to know how to tumble? No, tumbling is not a requirement to cheer. We do encourage tumbling classes at the gym of your choice which will help them with flexibility, stability, strength and prepare them for Middle and High School.

I already know my child’s sizes, do I have to attend registration/fittings?

Yes, you MUST attend Mandatory Fitting for your child to be properly fitted for their uniform and other apparel which are not always sized the same as standard clothing. Parents are required to sign off on all sizes placed; any incorrect sizes ordered are the responsibility of the parent.
If my child changes their mind after Registration, am I able to receive a refund?MVAA has a no refund policy.
There are two reasons a refund may be considered: moving out of area or serious injury/illness resulting in the cheerleader not being able to participate. Refunds are only considered if MVAA Cheer is notified prior to the Parent Information/Team Meeting and required documentation is provided: evidence of move through school registration information or letter from a qualified physician indicating the child is unable to participate. Note: only Registration Fee & Uniform Deposit will be refunded.
Can my daughter cheer for her brother’s football team?
Each child must be placed on a team following age/grade guidelines set forth by GFL. Age is determined by age as of September 1; grade is the grade entering in the Fall of the season. Equivalents are: 1st grade/6-year old, 2nd grade/7-year old, 3rd grade/8-year old and so on. If your children are twins in the same grade, then arrangements can be made to keep them together.

Does my child have to try-out for cheerleading or to be placed on a team?

MVAA does not hold try-outs for football or competition participation to allow every child an opportunity to experience the sport. Evaluations are held to assess skills in the event a cheer squad needs to split to support two football teams for their age bracket.
When does the season begin?
The full season begins approximately two weeks before school begins with Mandatory camps, clinics and practice. Please see important dates for specifics. It is critical that all cheerleaders attend camps and clinics during the two weeks before school starts as fundamental skills and cheer routines are established during this time. Football games will begin with Jamboree usually the 1st Saturday after school begins and run through mid-October.
How many times a week do they practice?  Normal practice is held 3 times a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
How long is practice?
Practice lasts for 1.5 hours for 1st-7th grades during regular season practice. 8th grade practice is two (2) hours. 1st-5th graders practice from 6pm to 7:30pm and 6th-8th begins practice at 7:30pm.
Where is practice held?
Regular season practice is normally held at Rabbit Hill Park at the football field. Camps and clinics are usually at a gym or MVHS. On occasion, practice may be held at an alternate location (gym/high school) when preparing for competitions or due to inclement weather. Transportation is not provided to practices.

When and where are games played? When will we know the schedule?

Games are only played on Saturdays at Gwinnett County parks. All football schedules are created by Gwinnett Football League (GFL) for all 19 GFL member associations. Often associations do not receive the schedule until the week of the first season games and there are no guarantees of number of home games per season. Transportation is not provided to games.
